PICTURE BY John Elfryn Owen shows Lewis Connor celebrating his goal for Llanerchymedd.
LLANERCHYMEDD put themselves on the cusp of winning the first-ever North Wales Coast West Division One title with their latest win.
Meirion Grieves’ side bounced back from a disappointing 0-0 draw v Bodorgan in midweek to beat Bontnewydd 3-1 at Tan Parc.
They now need just the one point from their final two matches to ensure they win the league – although it will be tough as they take on Talysarn Celts (3rd) and Bethesda Athletic (2nd) respectively.
Things couldn’t have got off to a much worse start for Medd when Bont captain Gari Owen gave the visitors the lead just 3 minutes in, his shot beating the outstretched Kenny Hughes.
And the scoreline remained the same until half time – would this be another match for Medd to end up ruing missed chances in?
Well, no is the answer as they came out fighting and looking more like champions in the second half.
Medd pressed hard and found an equaliser through the returning Ben Hughes whose cross, assisted by the wind, flew in over Gareth Huws-Thomas in the Bontnewydd goal on 54mins.
Soon after, they turned the tie was turned on its head when Lewis Connor nodded the ball down from a corner and it bounced over the Bont defence and into the back of the net (61’).
It was tense as the scoreline hung in the balance for awhile but the eventual pivotal goal of the game came from attacker Dan Evans whose header was powered through the hand of Huws-Thomas on 81mins to secure a huge three points.
Bont can again take heart from their performance on the day – incredibly 11 of their 14 players who played this match were under 20 years old and that’s something to be very proud of in AFE’s opinion.
A draw away at Talysarn Celts on May 4 will now be enough for Llan to win the league. But having already lost to the Celts twice this season (3-2 in Junior Cup and 3-1 in league) it’s fair to say it may not be easy for them!
