PICTURE: Joe Todd (blue) was again the hero for Bethesda Athletic at School Lane.
BETHESDA Athletic showed tremendous heart to fight back from 2-0 and 3-1 down to earn a point away at Cemaes Bay.
Heading into the North Wales Coast West Division One tie – Athletic were 2nd in the table on 62pts (26 matches played) and Cemaes were 4th on 57pts (24 matches played).
It was always going to be an entertaining match for the neutral – and so it proved to be as it provided a penalty, red cards and six goals under the School Lane lights.
Cemaes were off to a flier when winger Matty Roberts’ fine low finish put them 1-0 up after just four minutes of the tie.
Pesda coach Mark Thomas was then dismissed by referee Liam Martin for dissent before Roberts turned provider for Matt Reynolds who calmly slotted home just before half time for 2-0.
In the second half, the visitors responded well, and looked fired up, as they found an early goal through young attacker Daniel Hughes’ close range finish. That was the 18-year-old’s 11th goal in just 13 appearances since coming back from a serious injury.
His brother and club captain Osian Hughes was sent off after receiving a second yellow card soon after.
Then, Cemaes must have thought the game was done and dusted when centre back Dylan Jones’ great ball over the top found Roberts who squared the ball across the face of goal for Reynolds’ 35 goal of the season to make it 3-1 on 82mins.
But Pesda refused to give up and pulled another back through a well-taken Joe Todd penalty on 84mins.
Cemaes midfielder Ryan Folksman was then sent off for a second foul before Todd scored again from a header three minutes from time to secure a big point for Pesda on the road and keep their title hopes just about alive.
The attacking midfielder has been one of the standout stars in tier five this season, scoring 26 goals in just 23 matches.
Overall though, you can’t help but feel that this result only benefitted league-leaders Llanerchymedd (who are in action v Bodorgan tonight) the most.
They sit five points clear of Bethesda Athletic on 68pts (having played 26 matches).
However – they do have to face two of the league’s top four (Talysarn Celts away and Bethesda Athletic home) in their remaining two matches after tonight so there could still be some drama to come just yet!
