TWO former Wales internationals-turned-pundits were on hand to unveil a tier four club’s new stand yesterday.
Sgorio duo John Hartson and Malcolm Allen were both at Mynydd Llandegai’s home ground ahead of the club’s North Wales Coast West Premier match v Pwllheli.
The game unfortunately ended in a 2-1 loss for the home side – Gavin Owen had given Mynydd the lead early on but an in-form Pwll fought back through Jamie Banks and Robin Hicks to climb to the top of the table for the time being.
Nevertheless, that couldn’t take the shine off what was a memorable day for Mynydd Llandegai – officially unveiling their new 100-seater stand to the public with two familiar Welsh footballing faces on hand to do so.
Both Hartson, a pundit, and Allen, a commentator, are familiar to Sgorio viewers these days but they were of course both former Wales internationals during their careers and both played in England’s top-flight too.
Striker Hartson played for the likes of Arsenal, West Ham and Celtic, where he enjoyed his most prolific spell netting 88 times in 146 league appearances for the Glasgow club.
He also earned 54 caps for Wales, scoring on 14 occasions.
A lifelong Swansea City supporter, Hartson also overcame testicular cancer back in 2009.
Fellow former attacker, Allen – who is from Deiniolen – played for Watford, Aston Villa, Norwich City, Millwall and Newcastle United (where he scored 7 goals in just 12 league appearances. He also played 14 times for Wales, scoring 3 goals.
Since retiring, he has rubber-stamped his place on Sgorio as one of the main commentators and is a familiar face (and voice!) to many by now.
A statement from Mynydd Llandegai about the pair’s visit read: “A big thank you to everyone who came up to support and stayed to meet Big John Hartson and Malcolm Allen yesterday.
“Fair play to Malcolm and John for giving up their time to come up to see the work completed to improve our facilities, which includes the completion of a 100 seater stand, especially John as he travelled all the way from Edinburgh!
“It was quite inspiring to hear John talk about his life and career and have a few pints with lads in the Bull afterwards.
“Also, a big thank you to RWH Fabrications Ltd and Cromwell Services for completing the work and doing such a good job!”
Mynydd are a club on the up and this stand is testament to that – great to see!
