BONTNEWYDD have made a second big signing in as many days as they welcome attacker Sam Williams to Cae Stanley.
‘Ziggy’ as he’s known was the last ever top scorer in the Anglesey League come the end of the 2019/20 season – with the change in league structure taking place after that.
During a season cut short by the Coronavirus pandemic, the attacker scored 44 goals in all competitions for Mountain Rangers as they finished runners-up in the division.
The 35-year-old scored 33 goals in the league itself – including twelve goals in ONE match in a 16-0 hammering of Cefni in January 2020.
That is believed to be a record for goals scored by a single player in a single game in the Anglesey League and may even be up there with British records, although this is unconfirmed.
The former Llanrug United man now arrives at Bontnewydd with fellow ex-Rangers player and captain Simon Kay who has also signed for the club this week.
Upon signing for Bont, Williams said “I can’t wait to start playing with the lads. Hopefully I can help the team with my share of the goals and I’m looking forward to playing alongside the young talented Cai Edwards who has been on fire so far this season. Playing alongside players like Cai is one of the reasons I joined this fantastic club.”
Bontnewydd Manager Simon Jones added: “Williams’s eye for goal is superb and he has really established himself over the years as one of the best forwards around. A lot like yesterday’s signing of Josie (Simon Kay), Sam will also be a massive help to the fantastic younger lads we are lucky to have in our squad with his experience and knowledge of the game”.
Williams is another fine addition to a Bont side who are quite clearly on the quest for success in North Wales Coast West Division One this season.
