IT WAS always going to be a close game wasn’t it? And so it proved as Llanerchymedd came away from Cemaes Bay’s School Lane with a narrow 1-0 victory in the North Wales Coast West Division One opener.
A long wait for official football to return for the island was ended under floodlights tonight as fans poured into Cemaes’ ground to watch the action.
And, despite the numerous vastly experienced faces on show tonight, it was a young star who proved to be the match-winner.
In a tense and close-fought battle, which showcased some of the very best that tier five will have to offer, it was 16-year-old Ben Hughes‘ goal just before half time which settled the differences on the night.
The Caernarfon Town academy player (below) shone bright on the night for Llan in a side which featured a few players who have played as high up as tier two in recent seasons.
Llan’s defence, made up of Tomos and Ryan Jones, Dylan Owen and Dan Thomas, stood strong throughout to shut out a Cemaes Bay side who scored 98 goals in just 16 matches in the last-ever Anglesey League in which they won the title in 2019/20.
And so, as two of the pre-season tier five title favourites went head-to-head it was Meirion Grieves’ boys in green who emerged victorious and earned themselves what could be a massive three points in months to come.

Daniel Jones (GK)
