Happy birthday to the Anglesey League’s last-ever top scorer!

THE Anglesey League came to and end in 2019/20 after 125 years of existence.

With the Football Association of Wales (FAW), shaking the league systems up, the league was scrapped and replaced by the new North Wales Coast West Leagues.

As a result, Mountain Rangers’ Sam Williams was the division’s last ever top goal scorer. Today, the forward turns 35 years old.

In what was the Rhosgadfan-based side’s one and only season in the AL, ‘Ziggy’ as he’s known was one of their key players and fired them to a runner-up place.

Rangers were narrowly beaten on PPG (Points Per Game) by Cemaes Bay with the coronavirus pandemic ending the season early. The two clubs will meet again in tier five in 21/22.

A former Llanrug United, Bethel and Glantraeth player, Williams (above) was bought in by Rangers manager Alex Philp to help fire the club to glory in their comeback season following a period of non-existence for the club. And boy did he repay that faith his manager showed in him.

Williams scored 33 league goals and 11 in cup competitions to place himself on 44 goals in total, making him the deadliest striker of them all as we waved goodbye to the Anglesey League.

The highlight of the striker’s season of course came in January 2020 when he scored no less than TWELVE of his side’s goals against Cefni in a 16-0 win. This is believed to be a record for goals scored by one player in a single game in the Anglesey League and may even be up there with British records, although this is unconfirmed.

Either way, it’s fair to say that Williams’ eye for goal last season was superb and he really established himself as one of the best forwards around.

The forward was not far off a club record either. John Hayes holds the club record for most goals scored in a season (56 in 1993/94) at Rangers and I’m sure that had the last campaign continued Williams could have beaten that tally.

He’s remaining with Rangers for the 21/22 campaign and will no doubt be looking to keep fire in the goals when football resumes around July time.

AFE hopes you’ve had a great birthday Sam!
