Happy Birthday Karen ‘Flip’ Williams!

TODAY marks the birthday of a female coach who has had a hugely positive impact on the women’s game down the years.

Karen Williams, AKA ‘Flip’ was the mastermind behind the success of the Ynys Môn Women’s Team who earned themselves silver medals at the Inter Island Games football tournament back in the summer of 2019.

That was seen as a major success for the side, who had previously won just one of 14 of their previous matches in the last four tournaments before that one.

It was a different story for the Women’s side on home soil in 2019 however as a talented crop of players, selected by and led by Williams finished as runners-up in the tournament, with only a very strong Isle of Man Women’s team eventually stopping them in their tracks.

Nevertheless, that was a very memorable summer for the ladies involved including Williams, who turns 42 years old today. Ynys Môn’s women’s side that year was a good mixture of youth and experience and that really paid dividends in the end.

They started off very well with a 3-1 win over the Western isles, thanks to a hat-trick from Amlwch Ladies starlet Lexi Crawley, but then fell to a narrow 3-2 loss at the hands of Hitra (Jordanne Greenough and Crawley hitting the target for Mon). However, they went on to top their group (on goal difference) thanks to the Western Isles defeating Hitra 1-0 in a surprise win.

The semi-final proved to be another memorable occasion for the Môn ladies as Crawley would again prove to be a match-winner – this time scoring the only goal of the game in a 1-0 win over a talented Jersey side.

Then came Williams’ side’s time to shine in the final. They eventually fell to a 2-1 loss to a very strong Isle of Man side at Holyhead Hotspur’s ground, with Catrin Evans, 16 years old at the time, scoring for the hosts.

Williams deserves massive credit for A) the squad she selected for that tournament, B) setting them up to play great football, and form a great defence in particular and C) guiding it to second place overall.

A woman who deserves great praise for what she’s done for the ladies game on the island, particularly for her influence on that Môn squad and also with Amlwch Town ladies both as a player and as a manager over the years. Here’s wishing ‘Flip’ a great birthday!
