2019/20 team focus: Llandegfan FC hope for turnaround in fortunes

League: Anglesey League
Formed in: 2017 (re-formed)
Major Honours: NWCFA Junior Cup (1974-75)
Captain: Alex Clarke
Manager: Arron Evans
Did you know?: The club competed in the first ever Dargie Cup final way back in 1922/23 – where they were beaten by Benllech.

I THINK it’s about time I focus on my own club on here for a change isn’t it? Once again we’re heading into the season as the underdogs, unfancied by many, but we never give up on our goals.

This time around, I thoroughly believe that we have a good squad of talented players together and don’t see why we can’t shock even the best when it comes down to it.

Our pre-season has shown we’re up for the fight. Despite still losing every game, we are only being beaten by one or two goals. Against Cefni, we lost 2-1 and showed a solid defensive display, against Four Mile Bridge we came from 3-0 down to be beaten 5-4 and at Llangoed, who are in a higher league, we did well despite losing 3-1 (although it was 17-0 in the same game this time last season).

Anyway, that all said, here’s a quick look at the 23 players who have signed to the club for 2019/20 (although there may be more to come as well!).

DUANE HUNT

Position: Goalkeeper
Age: 32
Supports: Arsenal

Established himself as the club’s number one last season after intially starting out as a central midfielder and earned himself the club’s Player of the Season award after some fine performances.

Hunt is a former Llangoed player who is a highly reliable shot-stopper and should proved to be a key player for Llandeg once more during 2019/20.

DYLAN CHADD

PICTURE: Wynne Evans

Position: Full back
Age: 21
Supports: Liverpool

A player who has vastly improved since arriving from Pentraeth Reserves at the start of 2018/19 and has established himself as a first team player.

Chadd is a full back who likes to get forward and will undoubtedly go on to make several more appearances for the club this season.

CHRIS HUGHES

PICTURE: Wynne Evans

Position: Full back
Age: 29
Supports: Manchester City

Didn’t make as many appearances as he would have liked to have done last season due to work commitments, but this time around we hope Chris will be there more often as he’s a solid defender.

He’s been with the club since our first season (although he did briefly leave for a spell with Arriva!), and he’s now one of the more experienced players within our team.

JAMES HALL

PICTURE: Wynne Evans.

Position: Full back/winger
Age: 18
Supports: Liverpool

Another young player who is beginning to truly fulfil his potential and show us what he can do.

Hall was another Pentraeth Reserves player who switched allegiances to Llandeg in the summer of 2018 and despite only being 17 years old, he proved to be a consistently great performer for the club.

This year, we’ll be giving him a shot at full back and as a winger and I’m sure he’ll be one to watch.

DALE ROWLANDS

PICTURE: Wynne Evans

Position: Full back/winger
Age: 25
Supports: Liverpool

Another player who can be deployed anywhere out wide (and up top if needed). Rowlands helped re-form the club in the summer of 2017.

He briefly left for Llangoed in the Gwynedd League for the latter half of last season but now he’s back at Lon Ty Newydd for 19/20. His pace and leadership will benefit us greatly.

PAUL ROBERTS

PICTURE: Llandegfan FC

Position: Full back/winger
Age:
Supports: Liverpool

Was with the club alongside brother Matt in our first season of 2017/18 and the pair have now returned to the club ahead of 19/20.

After a year out from the game, Paul is hoping to make an impact on our season from out wide.

MARCUS WILLIAMS-EDWARDS

Position: Full back/winger
Age: 25
Supports: Liverpool

Has travelled from as far away from Porthmadog to join Llandeg this season and has looked good in training and in pre-season too.

Pacey player who can be a defender or a winger for us.

ALEX CLARKE

PICTURE: Wynne Evans

Position: Centre back
Age: 24
Supports: Manchester United

Joined the club in March 2018 having given up on rugby and the progress he has made since then has been outstanding.

Now captain of the club, he’s become one of the first names on the teamsheet for Llandeg. A solid centre back who’s quicker than he looks and is great in the air too.

He will play a massive role in any success we might have this season.

MATTHEW ROBERTS

PICTURE: Paul Scholes

Position: Centre back
Age: 22
Position: Liverpool

Another quality addition to our side for 2019/20.

Our 2017/18 Player of the Season, Matt is a quick and tough-tackling centre back who is always composed on the ball and carry the team forward too.

Having spent a season with Bro Goronwy in the Gwynedd League last season, where he played several matches, he’s now back to add some more experience and solidity to our ranks.

GETHIN GRIFFITH

PICTURE: Wynne Evans

Position: Centre back
Age: 20

Geth looks like he could be a great player for our team. In pre-season, he’s played in Centre mid, Centre back and even in goal – but it was in the heart of the defence in the game v Llangoed he really stood out.

Much like Matt, he’s a calm figure on the ball, is very vocal (which every team needs) and his height will always be a real advantage too. We’re really looking forward to seeing what he can do for us.

CAMERON SLATER

Position: Centre mid/centre back
Age: 24
Supports: Manchester United

Last season’s Players Player of the Season – Cambo was a welcome addition after arriving from Llangoed, playing at centre back.

This time around, we’re looking to play him in midfield, as he’s a player who loves to get stuck in and win the ball back. He’s also a player who wins headers and is physical so he’ll be another key player for us.

CARWYN THOMPSON

PICTURE: Richard Gregson

Position: Centre mid
Age: 40
Supports: Manchester United

Very pleased to be bringing Carwyn in this year as he was someone who caught the eye when we played Llanfairpwll last season. Despite being 40, his work rate is exceptional.

He’s a real ball-winner in the middle of the park and his experience and passion will be vital for us this season.

KIERAN FRITTER

Position: Centre mid/Centre back
Age: 32
Supports: Liverpool

Our other Player of the Season from 2018/19 has also re-signed for the upcoming campaign. He’s another one who played at the back last season but will play in midfield this time around, unless needed elsewhere.

Fritter is another real workhorse in the side and I think this year we’ll see some goals from him as well, now that he’s most likely to play in central midfield.

His leadership last season was very important to us and we’re all glad to see him back after his operation.

SEUN OKI

PICTURE: Richard Gregson

Position: Centre mid
Age: 24
Supports: Arsenal

A Bangor Uni student of Nigerian descent – Seun has impressed in pre-season, even bagging a goal when we stuck him up top against Llangoed last weekend.

He’s a strong player on the ball and is good technically too, having the ability to shift his feet quickly.

IAN PRICE

Position: Centre mid
Age: 29
Supports: Liverpool

Price has travelled from Harlech to join us this season, He looks like a good midfielder, who could also do a job defensively for us when needed.

ALED DAVIES

Position: Winger
Age: 20
Supports: Arsenal

A former Menai Tigers Juniors player, Aled has looked lively in pre-season, popping up with a fine chipped goal against Cefni.

He’s another young player who could really stand out for us this season whenever he gets the chance as he loves to get forward and create/take his chances.

DECLAN HAMPSON

Position: Winger
Age: 29
Supports: Manchester United

A player who has been very committed to the club since the very first training session of the summer. He’s played a few games in pre-season and could be a useful player for us out wide if he sticks at it.

YUSUF AGUNBIADE

PICTURE: Wynne Evans

Position: Winger/Attacking mid
Age: 20
Supports: Chelsea

Another Bangor Uni student who has joined the team alongside friend Seun and has impressed us. Yusuf is a very quick player who, given a bit of time, will be a very good player for us.

He has previously played for clubs in his native of Republic of Ireland.

CHARLIE DIAMOND

PICTURE: Wynne Evans

Position: Attacking mid
Age: 28
Supports: Fulham

Former Valley player who will undoubtedly add some much needed box-to-box work rate to our midfield this season. Diamond is a player who never stops running around in the middle of the pitch and he’s sure to get a few goals and assists to his name during 19/20.

ROBERT BOYES

PICTURE: Wynne Evans

Position: Attacking mid/winger
Age: 18
Supports: Manchester United

We’re very glad to have former Bangor City academy player Rob back with us for the new campaign. He showed what he could do last season by bagging three goals and putting in a shift in every match he played.

His skill on the ball makes him a dangerous player to try and deal with both out wide and through the middle and we can’t wait to watch him play again this season.

JOSH ROYDS

PICTURE: Richard Gregson

Position: Attacking mid/Striker
Age: 24
Supports: Liverpool

One of the final “pieces of the jigsaw” for me ahead of the new season. Still only 24, Josh is an experienced midfielder/forward who has turned out for the likes of Llangoed, Arriva Bangor and most recently Mynydd Tigers in the past. He has also previously played for Llandeg.

He’s another player who will work very very hard for the team and will certainly have goals in him this season.

PAUL JONES

PICTURE: Wynne Evans

Position: Striker
Age: 34
Supports: Manchester United

A tireless striker who loves to chase down the defence and find space in behind them too. Paul arrived at the club from Cefni last season, where he had hit eight goals.

Three more goals followed for Llandeg and he will be looking to reach double figures once more this season. He’s looked sharp in pre-season and bagged three penalties in the 5-4 loss to Four Mile Bridge.

DAVE PARRY

PICTURE: Wynne Evans

Position: Striker
Age: 28
Supports: West Brom

Last season’s top scorer with eight goals, “Def” has been a massive addition to the club both on and off it.

Having arrived from Llanllyfni FC, he proved what he could do by popping up with three goals in pre-season before finishing as our top scorer despite missing the final few weeks of the season through injury.

He’s now recovering from an operation, but once he’s fully fit again, his strength and ability to hold up the ball for team mates will come in very handy for us.

And a special shout for …

RYAN WILLIAMS (ASSISTANT MANAGER)

Position: Right back/Centre back
Age: 20
Supports: Tottenham Hotspur

Couldn’t do the job behind the scenes without him to be honest but he is also a great player too and has been with the club since day one.

“Squid” can play anywhere across the back and gives us a solid option if we are shot on players.
