PFA Team of the Year announced: But is it the right line-up?

AS THE end of yet another Premier League season is nearly upon us, the PFA (Professional Footballers’ Association) Team of the Year has been released yesterday and it is well and truly and unsurprisingly dominated by Chelsea and Tottenham players.

The team chosen is as follows:

Goalkeeper: David De Gea (Manchester United)

Defenders: Kyle Walker (Spurs), David Luiz (Chelsea), Gary Cahill (Chelsea) and Danny Rose (Spurs).

Midfielders: Eden Hazard (Chelsea), Dele Alli (Spurs), N’Golo Kante (Chelsea) and Sadio Mane (Liverpool).

Strikers: Harry Kane (Spurs) and Romelu Lukaku (Everton).

I have to say, I agree with most of the choices in here. In the past, I’ve looked at Team of the Season announcements and thought “this is pure rubbish”, but this year they’ve done quite well I think.

HOWEVER, there are a few things I’d like to add …

David De Gea is a great goalkeeper, there’s no denying that, but I do believe that there has been better performers between the sticks this season. Hugo Lloris (Spurs) or Thibaut Courtois (Chelsea) probably should have got the nod ahead of him in my opinion, as they have more clean sheets than him and have stood out more in big games.

Courtois has 14 clean sheets this season, the most of any Goalkeeper in the Premier League.

Defence is pretty solid, but I might have gone for the outsider, Virgil Van Dijk (Southampton) instead of Luiz as he has been superb at the back for the Saints this season. For me, Luiz is a player who is prone to making too many mistakes and has only looked better this season because he has Kante covering his backside. On the other hand, he does have his great days too, like when he kept Sergio Aguero (Man City) in his back pocket, so can’t argue too much about this choice.

I also would have gone for Victor Moses (Chelsea) instead of Kyle Walker at right back as the Nigerian has resurrected his career under Antonio Conte’s new tactics and formation at Stamford Bridge and has proved a real handful for fellow defenders when he’s pushed forward this season.

Reborn – Moses has come back to life under Conte’s guidance.

Hazard is fine by me. Alli and Kante you definitely can’t argue with. But to include Mane in the Team of the Year ahead of Alexis Sanchez (Arsenal) is CRIMINAL.

How can you put Sanchez up for player of the year and not put Mane up for it and then somehow put the Liverpool winger in the Team of the Year ahead of a player who has been outstanding all year long? I’m puzzled over this one. Don’t get me wrong, I like Mane and I think he’s had a terrific first season at Anfield tearing defenders to bits, but Sanchez has scored 19 league goals compared to his 13 and 9 assists compared to his 5. Maybe it’s just cause I’m an Arsenal fan, but I really just cannot believe that Sanchez has been left out of this team.

Rejected – Sanchez will no doubt be unhappy at his surprise exclusion from the Team of the Year.

Up front, I don’t think you can really argue with Kane and Lukaku being there as they are the top two scorers in the league. Zlatan Ibrahimovic (Manchester United) has had a fine first season in the Premier League at 35 years old and Diego Costa (Chelsea) has also been prolific, but Kane and Lukaku have definitely been the most consistent goal scorers in the league and so they’ve made the right choice here.

For me, this would be my team of the year:

Goalkeeper: Thibaut Courtois (Chelsea)

Defenders: Victor Moses (Chelsea), Virgil Van Dijk (Southampton), Gary Cahill (Chelsea) and Danny Rose (Spurs).

Midfielders: Eden Hazard (Chelsea), Dele Alli (Spurs), N’Golo Kante (Chelsea) and Alexis Sanchez (Arsenal).

Strikers: Harry Kane (Spurs) and Romelu Lukaku (Everton).

You’d almost think I was a Chelsea fan looking at this squad, but you simply can’t deny that they’ve been unstoppable at times this season.

Exceptional talent – In his two seasons in England, Kante has been in the Team of the Year both times.
